Adapting to climate change means making sure everyone is part of the solution—especially those who often face the brunt of the crisis.

In a recent debate hosted by Debating Europe, I joined a fascinating discussion on how we ensure fair climate adaptation across Europe, featuring Sofia Heden, Deputy-Mayor of Malmö, Sweden, and Micol Sagal Ambroso, as Citizen par of Debating Europe’s Community, and moderated by Alessandra Cardaci.

Here are some highlights that shed light on what this truly means:

🔹 Mapping Vulnerabilities: As I noted, “Adaptation cannot happen in a silo. It has to happen with a better understanding of the social dynamics that are at stake.” Identifying who is most affected is step one. Solutions must be targeted where they’re needed most to bridge existing gaps.

🔹 Bringing Private Sector on Board: Companies are part of our society, not outsiders. Their climate commitments need to go beyond “green” words—they must be actions we can trust. I said, “There is nothing more concrete than trust… businesses must make an extra effort to be understood by more people,” and transparency is critical to rebuilding that trust. Accountability, clarity, and accessible information are essential for real change.

🔹 Community-Driven Green Solutions: “It’s really important to have this kind of decision with local communities, with the schools, with the youth organizations…that’s where the change really happens.” Local voices matter. Co-designing green spaces with residents can ensure that climate initiatives don’t lead to green gentrification, pushing out vulnerable groups. Cities can prioritize affordable green housing, like Malmö’s initiative where “local actors promise to make housing cheaper in exchange for reduced land prices.”

My message? Adaptation needs to be inclusive. It’s not just about “doing something” for the climate but doing it together, so every community is strengthened.
