Energy Poverty has been quite high on the news lately, between soaring energy prices, the ‘just transition’ agenda and the launch of the new Energy Poverty Advisory Hub (EPAH)
But how can we make sure solutions are fair, comprehensive & long-lasting?
ENGAGER, a network of energy poverty researchers, has a few ideas, that Marine Cornelis edited in a toolkit for a transition with the people. Mirjam De Ruiter has put all her talent into the illustrations.
First, we need to acknowledge that building renovation is not a magic wand against energy poverty. We need a Renovation Wave that actively strengthens social cohesion
Social workers and other grassroots organisations are critical partners. They need to be well funded and get all possible support to perform their work
People are part of the solution and we “experts” must listen to them and help level the playing field. Energy democracy is needed now. The just transition must be designed WITH the people, not ‘for’ them
Sectoral policies have shown their limits. Against energy poverty, we need comprehensive intersectional approaches that consider, for instance, gender and racial discrimination issues
People and communities affected by energy poverty might get stuck in low-quality jobs and unemployment. The Just Transition is a great opportunity to launch ambitious job policies
Trust is key that’s why we need ombuds – create them when they don’t exist, reinforce their scope when they do
