Energy is a man’s world. So far.
Women represent 23% of the energy workforce in the EU – and even less in leadership positions.
We have a problem: tackling this sector is critical to address climate change, and women are way more affected by energy poverty, but it is not representative of the society at large.
Women have a hard time applying for the job of their dreams, believing in their worth, becoming successful entrepreneurs, accessing funds, scaling up, balancing personal and professional duties – while taking care of their own wellbeing (I include myself too). In too many ways, “it’s impossible to be a woman”. And it’s preventing further advancement!
Diversity is a winner, for the people, for the planet, for the economy too. It fosters the creativity and trust we urgently need everywhere to deliver to everyone.
Gender equality and diversity objectives shouldn’t be afterthoughts – they should be the backbone of good business. The resounding sound of the “S” and “G” sustainability drums.
The energy sector can be a woman-friendly sector – it needs to be identified as such. A few pioneering people and organisations have been willing to play this alternative music together.
Today in Florence, we have been gathering around two pioneering initiatives: the Equality Platform for the Energy Sector of the European Commission; and the LUCE Award of the FSR’s Light on Women initiative, celebrating trailblazers in the sector. Congratulations Suzana Munuo and Joyce Kisamo!
Different corporate and academic cultures have been showing it’s possible to challenge their perception and create safe spaces for diversity to thrive. Gender-mainstreaming methodologies can be widespread.
People and organisations involved have been sharing their not-so-rosy journey and let themselves be open and vulnerable. We’ve been humans. Because the only way we can grow is by listening to each other and accepting our flaws.
I’m so grateful to be part of those initiatives and uncomfortable conversations. We know they are just the starting points. Let’s roll our sleeves a little higher to turn more ideas into unstoppable actions.
